La Roux to Take New Musical Direction in 2010 as They Look to Expand on First Album
For their next album, the duo behind electro-pop outfit La Roux plan a less commercial experience for their fans. In an interview with BBC 6 Music, La Roux singer Elly Jackson discussed the duo’s sophomore effort as well as an upcoming 6 Music Live Combo collaboration with Heaven 17. In 2009 La Roux’s In For The Kill music video became one of the most watched on social video sites.
Jackson confirmed that their next album would incorporate elements of disco and that it was “going to go a lot less mainstream, but it’s a bit of a gamble.”
The singer explained: “I’m certainly not going to try and make a mainstream record and I’m not going to try and make a non-mainstream record. We’re going to make the record that me and Ben want to make, but I have a feeling it’s going to be less mainstream.”
She went on to say that both she and La Roux producer Ben Langmaid were looking forward to working with the new wave band Heaven 17.
“We’re very, very chuffed to be teaming up with Heaven 17,” she said. “We feel very lucky and when it got mentioned I think Ben nearly wet himself.”
The duo and Martyn Ware, keyboardist of Heaven 17, have been fans of each other’s work for quite some time now, according to Jackson: “He asked to come to one of our very first-ever shows. He came and he didn’t get in – the bouncer wouldn’t let him in. He was the only person I was bothered about turning up and I thought he didn’t come. He emailed me and said ‘they wouldn’t let me in’ – very annoying.”
Since the mishap the connection between these musicians only grew stronger.
“Martyn and Ben have gone out for tea,” Jackson confirmed, “and talked about music and synthesizers and have had a real geek-off, it’s been quite funny.”
Of the upcoming collaboration Jackson told 6 Music: “I think it will be interesting, and I think whatever we do will be fun as well – it won’t be serious.”
