Hyperactivity vs ADD – What’s The Difference?

Filed under: Better Templates @ 6:19 am

A common misconception, when it comes to Attention Deficit Disorder, is that it is one in the same with hyperactivity. However, this is far from the truth. While people with ADD may exhibit signs of hyperactivity, it is not an inherent trait of the disorder and often does not occur with sufferers of ADD.

Hyperactivity is a general term referring to excessive and/or pathological activeness. This term is often used erroneously for an active person that does not meet the excessive criteria. It is important to understand that all children are active to a certain extent, and that some are even extremely active. However, this does not necessarily constitute hyperactivity. A hyperactive person will seem to be driven to movement, making it almost impossible to sit still. If sitting, they will often fidget or talk excessively as a countermeasure. Hyperactivity is often difficult to assess in adults; however, children are much easier to diagnose.

Attention Deficit Disorder, on the other hand, is exhibited by inattentiveness, impulsiveness, and distractibility, but not necessarily hyperactivity. A child that suffers from ADD may have difficulty completing assignments, paying attention, and/or waiting their turn. In order for any of these behaviors to constitute a disorder, they must be extreme, create difficulty in completing daily activities, and not be appropriate behavior for the age group of the child. They must also occur for an extended period of time, at least six months and be identifiable prior to the age of 7 and continue thereafter.

However, some children with ADD also have hyperactivity, demonstrated as excessive fidgeting, running, and jumping at inappropriate times. They often seem to have an inability to be still. If a child exhibits hyperactivity in addition to Attention Deficit Disorder, they are often termed “ADHD”: Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. While many people assume the term ADD is an antiquated version of ADHD, they actually refer to two different types of disorders.

In all, there are typically three variations of ADD or ADHD. These are (1) inattentive type, (2) hyperactive-impulsive type, and (3) combination. Obviously the inattentive type exhibits a difficulty in paying attention and completing activities, but is not hyperactive. These children tend to be more difficult to diagnose. On the other hand, the hyperactive-impulsive type is extremely active and has a difficulty controlling their behavior. Of course, the third type is a combination of the two previous types and displays inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness.

How to Put the Fun Back in Meal Planning

Filed under: Eating Fun, Health, Support @ 2:26 am

Meal planning doesn’t have to feel like a chore anymore. It’s time to get excited to get back into the swing of things and plan some delicious meals. After all of the holiday menus filled with traditional dishes laden with fat and calories, filling your family with a more balanced fare will make them feel ready to face whatever life throws their way.

To begin your meal planning, gather some of your favorite recipe books. It is also a good idea to grab your grocers ads and your stack of coupons. Write a meal planning list beginning with what foods your family likes. If you have picky eaters, don’t try anything new during a week that you will be busy and have to get the kids fed and out the door in a timely manner. Its much easier to save new recipes for weekend meal planning.

Make sure you have plenty of space at your kitchen table so you can spread out all of you papers. Take care to notice special double coupon deals and in store specials. Compare the list of foods your family likes with the sales in the ads. Look through your coupons and match them to your list and the ads. Saving money while planning your meals will make it all the more enjoyable. If you put together an entree everyone will eat and add a salad or some crudites and low fat dip you will have a well rounded meal with something for even the pickiest eaters in your family. Maybe you can even add a cupcake for dessert , low fat of course.

NCAA Weekly Dish – 02/18/06

NCAA Weekly Dish – 02/18/06

With the college basketball season in full swing, Matt Fargo takes a look at three big games on tap that you cannot miss this Saturday. Saturday is BracketBuster day and while there are a lot of matchups that have absolutely no appeal, there is a handful that will not only be fun to watch but also have an impact on some bubble teams heading into the Big Dance. Fargo takes a look at three such matchups.

George Mason Patriots at Wichita St. Shockers 8:00 PM ET

The Patriots have reeled off seven straight wins and only one of their five losses has been by more than six points. Four of those losses came on the road, all by six points or less including an overtime defeat at Wake Forest. Three of their seven road wins have come against teams ranked 76th or better in the RPI so they are no strangers to winning big games away from home.

The Shockers were supposed to be in a rebuilding year but don’t tell that to the players. Wichita St. has only six losses on the season all against teams with an RPI of 30 or better. That might say something about playing big games but it also has four wins against teams in that same category, all coming at home. The Shockers have just one loss at Charles Koch Arena and that came against Northern Iowa back in early January.

George Mason has a tough defense that can handle the tough offense of the Shockers. The Patriots are allowing only 57.6 ppg on the season on 37.7 percent shooting which is 5th best in the entire country. The offense is not getting overshadowed however as it is ranked 14th, shooting 48.6 percent from the floor. Their +10.6 percent in shooting margin ranks fifth in the country behind Florida, Connecticut, Kansas and Texas.

Wichita St. is outscoring opponents by 10.6 ppg on its home floor while outshooting them by 6.6 percent. The defense only allows 38 percent shooting from the field so something will have to give against the Patriots excellent offense. Both teams come into this game ranked 25th in the latest RPI so only a complete debacle would keep them out of the big dance. A win for each would still go a long way.

Bucknell Bison at Northern Iowa Panthers 12:05 PM ET

Bucknell is no longer going to sneak up on anyone as the Bison have made a name for themselves with some huge wins over the last couple years. This team has reeled off 12 straight wins and two of their three losses on the season came against the likely #1 and #2 teams in next week’s poll, Duke and Villanova. Wins over Syracuse, DePaul and St. Joe’s look very good on the resume.

Northern Iowa certainly won’t be taking this team lightly as it saw what it did to Kansas in last years opening round on the NCAA Tournament. The Panthers are a hungry bunch right now as they have dropped two straight games by a combined four points including a road loss at Indiana St. by a point last time out. They have only two games left to try and catch Wichita St. and clinch the top spot in the MVC Tournament.

Bucknell snuck into the top 25 last week for the first time ever as it has rolled through the Patriot League without much resistance. With an RPI of 40, this is a team that could crash the Dance if it failed to win the conference tournament. A win against Northern Iowa, who has a current RPI of 32, would go a long way in that possibility. This will be the first Bison’s game of the season with a line.

Northern Iowa is 11-2 at home with both losses coming by three points against conference foes. The Panthers aren’t without their own collection of solid wins including victories over Iowa and LSU, the latter coming on the road. Both of these teams have faced the punches of the major conferences and are still standing so expect another battle on Saturday.

Northwestern St. Demons at Utah St. Aggies 10:00 PM ET

Utah St. rebounded from a home loss to New Mexico St., its first of the season, by blasting Idaho by 38 points on Wednesday. The Aggies have just three losses over their last 16 games, two of which came against New Mexico St. They are 11-1 at home while outscoring opponents by nearly 15 ppg. While no game is meaningless, Utah St. is more concerned about the WAC, where it sits a game out of first place.

Northwestern St. does not hail from the Big 10 as some might initially think as the Demons from Louisiana are the class of the Southland Conference. They have only one loss in conference action on the season, a seven-point setback at 2nd place Sam Houston St. While not many people have heard of this team since they are an off the board squad, seven major teams certainly know who they are.

The Demons played three lines games this season, going 3-0 against the number with an outright win against Oregon St. and losses to Iowa St. and Hawaii by a combined eight points. Northwestern St. also faced Missouri, Wichita St., Mississippi St. and Oklahoma St., winning the latter two outright while losing the former two by a combined 11 points. This team can play with the big boys.

Even with an RPI of 68, the Demons likely will not get an NCAA bid without winning the Southland Conference tournament so even another win over a top team won’t do it. A solid game could turn some heads but it won’t be enough to get them in. They will likely be more focused in this game but playing in Logan will be a tough challenge where Utah St. does not fold to anyone.

Mend Your Broken Heart For Valentines’s Day. Three Great Healthy Heart Exercises You Can Do In San F

Filed under: Sports Resources @ 6:11 am

February is the perfect month to consider mending your broken heart and San Francisco is the just the right city to do it. No, I am not talking about your love life. I am talking about strengthening the most important muscle in your body; your heart.

Valentine’s month is a period in between the holidays and summer. There are not as many distractions which make it a great month to begin an exercise program. The San Francisco setting for this is ideal with the cool clear days February provides and no fog!

More importantly there is no better city to train than San Francisco because of our unique topography. Where most cities have to rely solely on long, boring and flat cardio workouts we have a ton of options for quick, high intensity cardio workouts.

Three great options for fast cardio training that The City offers are: beach sprints, hill sprints and stair climbing.

1. Beach Sprints: Sprinting at the beach is great for developing strength in your legs as well as your heart. It takes more effort than sprinting on a solid surface and you can’t beat the scenery (unless all you can see is fog but that’s pretty cool too.) A great cardio workout at the beach would be to sprint for twenty seconds then walk for ten and repeat eight times for a total of four minutes. This is the Fartlek method of training and has been proven to be just as effective as running at a steady state for longer periods.

2. Hill Sprints: When I was young and had to walk everywhere I would curse the hills of San Francisco. Driving my old cars with stick shifts was never much fun either. Now it’s all about automatics and using the hills to exercise. Much like beach sprints; hill sprints are great for strengthening the legs and glutes, as well as your heart. The best thing about hill sprints is most likely you have a hill right outside your door (if you don’t you probably live close to the beach.) Try the “around the block run.” Jog easy downhill and around the turns and sprint uphill. Depending on the length and slope of the hill start out doing this once or twice and try to build up to five or six times or more.

3. Stair Climbing: One of the aspects of San Francisco I have always loved, even as a kid, is the amount of stairs we have. Long staircases slice through neighborhoods providing easy routes to our favorite coffee shops and create the feeling, for me, of being in an old world time and place. What I really love about them is the leg, glute and cardio workout they can provide. Try running up a long staircase, walking up two stairs at a time or carrying a pair of dumbbells on your climb. If you want to climb it more than once be careful coming back down as you will be tired.

Try these once or twice a week along with a longer, steady run. Of course do a proper warm up before exercising and always consult a physician before starting a new exercise program. Happy Valentines Day!

AFL Power Poll Week 1

Filed under: Sports Resources @ 6:44 pm

AFL Power Poll – Week 1

(CURRENT) (TEAM) (W/L RECORD) (LAST WEEKS RANK)

1) Colorado Crush (0-0) Hard not to keep the reigning AFL champs at the top of the list after winning it all last season in only the 3rd year of the franchise’s existence. With 17 of 20 back from last season’s roster, look for the Crush to be a major player in the upcoming campaign. EA sports AFL 2006 cover boy, QB John Dutton, is back to lead a potent attack with the help of OS Damian Harrell, WR’s Kevin McKenzie, Willis Marshall, Andy McCullough, and new addition Evan Hlavacek. The defense is still a cause for concern though as it was one of the worst in the league a season ago.

2) Georgia Force (0-0) HC Doug Plank and his staff are back in 2006 along with many of the players that contributed to their 11-5 mark. Back is QB Matt Nagy whose coming off his record breaking ‘05 campaign along with newly designated OS Chris Jackson and WR/LB Derek “Baby Moss” Lee who got some time in the pro ranks this past off-season on the Chicago Bears practice squad. However, a few key ingredients are missing this year and it will be interesting to see how the new guys perform. Either way, the Force boast one of the best lines in the business and it will keep the ArenaBowl runner-ups in the mix all season long.

3) Philadelphia Soul (0-0) There’s not a single doubt in my mind that if the Soul stay healthy this upcoming season the third time will be the charm for the Soul to get a playoff birth. I can’t believe how loaded this squad is on both sides of the ball! We all know about their fantastic offense from a year ago led by QB Tony Graziani and company, but it’s the additions on defense that lead me to believe the rocker guy in that commercial from a year ago in Vegas might be hoisting the hardware in ‘06. The influx of talent and knowledge from Orlando this past off-season is really going to pay off.

4) Nashville Kats (0-0) The rebirth of the Kats last season saw them get off to a terrible start, but a six-game winning streak to close has them poised to be a championship contender in ‘06. HC Pat Sperduto simply knows what it takes to win in this league, and the Kats had by far the best off-season of any other club. The Kats are stacked on the line, have one of the best WR corps in the game, maybe the best FB/LB corps ever, and decent QB play. There’s talent at every position on the field, and they’re coached by one of the games best. Nobody wants to line up against this bunch this season, and the Kats will be a flat out filthy opponent.

5) Tampa Bay Storm (0-0) HC Tim Marcum and the Storm enter 2006 in search of their sixth ArenaBowl championship, and they believe they’ve got the tools to get the job done. The offense is a very scary unit. It averaged 57 PPG a year ago at home, and brought in super WR/DB Bobby Sippio to add to its potent attack this past off-season. Look for QB Shane Stafford to maybe top last season’s gaudy numbers TD/INT ratio of 83/14). What worries me here is the defense as a few key cogs to their past success have since departed. The Storm will be a very tough out once the new guys gel with the mainstays, and will most definitely give Georgia all they could want and more.

6) Chicago Rush (0-0) Last season’s exit from the AFL Playoffs in the since deemed “Confetti Game” was a tough pill to swallow for Rush nation. Nonetheless, the outlook in 2006 looks bright for HC Mike Hohensee as Chicago is stacked at just about every position heading into the 2006 season. The main question mark remains at the QB position as former field general Raymond Philyaw’s recent string of injuries kept the front office from ponying up on extending his contract. Instead, the Rush brought in speedy QB Michael Bishop over from the division rival Rampage and hope the coaching staff can remedy his current passing mechanics. If he settles in comfortably, expect Chicago to reach the second season for the sixth straight year and knock the monkey that’s been the American Conference Final off their backs once and for all.

7) San Jose Sabercats (0-0) Last season’s early round exit in the post-season was enough to make the Sabercats front office decide to mix things up a bit this past off-season. Most of the regular mainstays are back, but they’ve retooled on both sides of the ball. HC Darren Arbet wanted to get back to more of a smash mouth type of play to compliment QB Mark Grieb’s passing attack and went out and grabbed two of the leagues better FB/LB’s in Phil Glover and Ja’Mar Toombs. The Sabercats will dearly miss the services of all everything Rashied Davis, but talent is on hand and there’s always the reliable James Roe to count on when things get tight.

8) Dallas Desperados (0-0) It was extremely tough to install the Despo’s this low on the totem poll, but even with all that talent they have to show me they’re not the same team that committed numerous bonehead penalties and mistakes throughout the entire 2006 season. The installment of QB Clint Dolezel should go rather smoothly as he’s got some big-time studs to throw to in OS Jason Shelley and WR’s Will Pettis and Dialleo Burks. He’s also got a running attack that needs to be respected with FB/LB Duke Pettijohn toting the rock. Dallas could explode out of the gates at 5-0, which would really install confidence into what could be a very dangerous squad.

9) New York Dragons (0-0) The Dragons won its third Eastern Division title last season with a solid 10-6 mark, but the fact that no other team in the East challenged for a playoff spot speaks volumes for how bad the division really was. QB Aaron Garcia put forth another fine campaign, and the Dragons offense looks to be one of the best units the league has to offer this season. However, the defense is another story. It’s been completely retooled and will prove to be their Achilles heel. Points won’t be hard to come by for the Dragons, but limiting opponents to score one more might be.

10) Los Angeles Avengers (0-0) Was the Avengers 2005 season and first Western Division Championship a fluke, or was all the off-season accolades and hardware warranted? We’re about to find out, and I’ve got a feeling it was a mix of both. No doubt this squad boasts some studs on both sides of the ball, but I’ve got major concerns at the QB position. However, HC Ed Hodgkiss has shown a knack for developing some stellar field generals in this league. The Avengers will be a very scrappy team in ‘06, and have the lethal K Remy Hamilton on their sideline to win all the close ones.

And the rest….

11) Orlando Predators (0-0) 12) Columbus Destroyers (0-0) 13) Austin Wranglers (0-0) 14) Grand Rapids Rampage (0-0) 15) Arizona Rattlers (0-0) 16) Utah Blaze (0-0) 17) Kansas City Brigade (0-0) 18) Las Vegas Gladiators (0-0)
